A majority of Americans, totaling 71% of respondents in a recent poll, including almost half of Democrats, believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction.
Additionally, 60% view Biden’s handling of the of the economy negatively. Most Americans disapprove of Biden’s job performance, giving low marks for uniting the country and competence in a recent national NBC News poll.
Biden’s falling poll numbers have seeped over into his party as a whole. The poll shows Democrats trailing Republicans on which party handles inflation, immigration, and the economy better.
The party has also lost ground on issues including Covid-19 and education.
Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates and Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies conducted the poll.
According to Horwitt, “Democrats face a country whose opinion of President Biden has turned sharply to the negative since April. The promise of the Biden presidency — knowledge, competence, and stability in tough times — have all been called into question.”
Fellow Democratic pollster Peter Hart explained the dropping poll numbers saying, “What people voted for were stability and calm. And what they got was instability and chaos.”
According to the poll, 42 percent of adults approve of President Biden’s overall job performance.
The number is a drop of 7 points since August. Fifty-four percent of respondents disapprove of the job the president is doing, up from six points since August.
The poll also found 51 percent approval for Biden’s handling of coronavirus, down two points, and 40 percent of Americans approving of the administration’s handling of the economy, down seven points since August.
The NBC News poll comes after a hard summer and early fall, as Biden faced criticism for rising inflation, disappointing job numbers, and a botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, leaving Americans and Afghans who backed the U.S. trapped in the war-torn country.
Different poll, same result
In a different Washington Post-ABC News poll, President Biden’s approval rating plummeted to a new low, driven by infighting and discontent in his party.
According to the recent survey, Republicans will head into the 2022 midterms with high hopes. The poll found 41% of Americans approving of the president’s performance, which is down 11 points since spring.
Biden’s support has fallen sharply in his party. Four in 10 Democrats strongly approve of Biden’s performance, down from seven in 10 who strongly approved in June.
Seventy percent of respondents said the economy is in bad shape, with 36 percent classifying the state of the economy as “poor.” The dropping numbers come amidst U.S. inflation hitting a 30-year high in October.
Republicans head toward the midterm election vote preferences with their most significant lead in the poll, dating back 40 years.
According to the survey, if voters headed to the polls today, 51 percent of registered voters say they would back the Republican candidate in their congressional district. In comparison, 41 percent would choose the Democratic candidate.
