Rep. Liz Cheney certainly had her day in the spotlight with the January 6th House select hearings, but the sun is setting on this Wyoming politician.
CNN recently traveled to Cheney’s state of Wyoming to talk with voters about their Representative and her upcoming primary race with fellow Republican Harriet Hageman.
Hageman has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump and is already surging ahead of Cheney in some polls.
One voter said, “I find her work on the January 6 committee just repulsive.”
Another, “It’s all a hoax, it’s all propaganda,” when they were asked about what they thought about Cheney’s leadership on the committee. He added it “has nothing to do with anything, a witch hunt.”
When one voter was told that Cheney believes she was upholding the rule of law and defending the Constitution, the person said, “If that was the rule of law, why doesn’t [Trump] have a defense team in that courtroom? That ain’t the rule of law, that’s a kangaroo court.”
Interviews with Wyoming voters were shown Friday on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360.” One clip showed a vote asked about their support for the current congresswoman and whether or not they would want Cheney in office for a fourth term.
The first response came quickly, “Hell no!”
This self-described Trump supporter defended her response by saying that Cheney did both the people of their state and former President Trump “dirty” by her outspoken position with the January 6 House committee.
“She’s done us dirty… look at how she’s done Trump. I’m a Trump fan,” she said, adding, “she’s supposed to be supporting him. She’s a Republican, for crying out loud.”
Trump and Wyoming Voters Turning on Liz Cheney
The negative interviews just kept coming as CNN correspondent Randi Kaye talked with voters. One said “absolutely not,” when asked if Cheney was getting his vote and another said they thought Cheney already had “three terms too many.”
One voter brought up an interesting point about the way the House Select Committee operated. He said it wasn’t fair that former President Trump did not have a defense team present to counter the committee’s claims about his alleged misconduct during the 2021 Capitol riot.
“That ain’t the rule of law,” he said, and then added, “That’s not the Wyoming way.”
Kaye talked about how Wyoming, The Equality State, had overwhelming support for former President Trump. He garnered 70% of the vote in the 2020 election. She said that this could signal Cheney’s downfall.
On CNN’s website, they admit that they found just two supporters of Cheney that they could talk with.
The Wyoming Republican Party would not go on camera with CNN. They released a statement saying, “the Wyoming Republican Party doesn’t take sides in primary elections” and that they “are neutral during this election” as well as that they “do not back or oppose candidates.”
The CNN commentator said that Cheney is depending on Democrats switching their party affiliation so they can vote for her.
Wait…What?
The truth is that Cheney began losing in the polls even before Trump endorsed Hageman. She distanced herself from her state party when she said, “I reject the notion that somehow we don’t have to abide by the rule of law. And the people right now who are in the leadership of our state party, I’m not trying to get their support because they’ve abandoned the Constitution.”
The primary race between Cheney and Hageman will take place on August 16, two weeks from this Tuesday. Cheney is hoping for a fourth term representing the at-large congressional district of Wyoming, which has only one House seat due to its low population.
